Australian Antarctic Data Centre

Node type

Commonwealth government

Node description

The Australian Antarctic Data Centre (AADC) was established in 1996 to fulfil Australia's role in addressing Article III.1.c of the Antarctic Treaty which states that "scientific observations and results from Antarctica shall be exchanged and made freely available". The Australian Antarctic Data Centre addresses the Government Goal for the Australian Antarctic program to "Enhance Australia's role in the Antarctic Treaty System" by establishing procedures that will result in the free delivery of information from Australia's Antarctic research program to all interested parties. The AADC automatically captures metadata from approved research projects and is updated annually in conjunction with progress reports. Data must be submitted to the AADC within two years of data collection and will be made freely available on the Internet.

Description of the organisation/jurisdiction

Australia and Antarctica were once joined in a supercontinent called Gondwana. Today they are the only continents belonging entirely to the Southern Hemisphere. An involvement with the Antarctic is a natural part of Australia's national identity and development. Since 1947 Australia has had a continuous presence in the Antarctic in the form of Australian National Antarctic Research Expeditions, known by its acronym ANARE (pronounced an-ah-ree). ANARE, administered by the Antarctic Division of the Department of the Environment, embraces the activities in Antarctica of both government and non-government bodies and individuals, with a central focus on scientific research.
