Arpil to June 2002

Introduction

At the end of June 2002, there were 24 repositories within the ASDD with a total of 31,560 dataset descriptions available for searching. Statistics are provided for the ASDD covering:

• web access statistics,
• gateway statistics,
• number of records at each repository,
• reliability of repository,

for the months of April, May and June 2002.

Repositories which have provided descriptions are also listed.

Achievements during past quarter

• The "Average Availability" column of the monthly reports now includes the time that the repository returns zero number of records. This may indicate that the indexes are corrupt and thus the node is unreliable.
• The "Murray-Darling Basin Commission Documents" is still offline while it is changing Internet service providers.
• The "SAWMILL" software is being used to generate the web statistics.
• The web statistics excludes access by the ASDD Gateway Manager's IP address. This access would have over stated the number of hits to the ASDD gateway.
• These quarterly reports are written in XHTML strict format and parsed using an XML parser.

Web Statistics for ASDD

This quarter's statistics for the ASDD are available for the period 2002-04-01 to 2002-06-30.

A summary of those statistics for this period follows:

Notes:

• The accesses to the images, style sheets and PDF files have been removed from this quarter's statistics.
• This quarter's web statistics exclude those of the ASDD test gateway, the cgi-data and the cgi-bin scripts.
• Althought the IP address of the ASDD gateway manager's computer has been removed from this quarter's statistics there are still more accesses than last quarter.
• There are the same number of visitors accessing the pages so it would seem that those visitors are accessing the ASDD more often.
• The Country Domains does not include the USA because most USA domains exclude the ".us" part of their domain.

Gateway Usage

The following statistics are a summary of the ASDD basic and ASDD power gateways:

ASDD Basic Gateway

• Approximately 4800 searches were made through the ASDD basic gateway.
• Approximately 4000 single search terms were used.
• Approximately 700 multiple search terms were used.

• Approximately 1000 searches were made through the ASDD power gateway.
• Approximately 460 single search terms were used.
• Approximately 560 multiple search terms were used.

Repository Records

The following table lists the repositories, the DTD used, the number of records per repository and the number of XML records that parsed and were accessible at the beginning of July 2002.

Note:

• These results take a long time to generate and may show different numbers to those of the monthly accesses. This could be due to nodes adding metadata to their repositories or some repositories not properly responding to the Z39.50 queries.
• Some records at some nodes are causing system errors in the parser used to parse these records. This may indicate that the records are terribly invalid or that the retrieval program is corrupting the records in some instances.
• "Not available" means that the server did not respond appropriately to the query at the time of investigation.
• "None" means that no DTD was provided in the XML records or no XML records were available.
• Only 65% of the records parse against a DTD.
• Only 7 repositories are using ANZMETA-1.3.DTD.
• Only 5 repositories have 100% valid records. However, some nodes were not available at the time of queries and the system errors may account for some of these errors in the records.

Repository managers are automatically notified by email if a server goes down for a period longer than four hours.
