April to June 2003

Introduction

At the end of June 2003, there were 25 repositories within the ASDD with a total of 33,173 dataset descriptions available for searching. Statistics are provided for the ASDD covering:

• web access statistics,
• gateway statistics,
• number of records at each repository,
• reliability of repository,

for the months of April, May and June 2003.

Repositories which have provided descriptions are also listed.

Achievements during past quarter

• The "Murray-Darling Basin Commission Documents" is still off line while it is changing Internet service providers.
• The validation problem of the very large XML records (> 100000 bytes) has been resolved.
• There are more visitors and accesses to the ASDD this quarter than last quarter.

Web Statistics for ASDD

This quarter's statistics for the ASDD are available for the period 2003-04-01 to 2003-06-30.

A summary of those statistics for this period follows:

Notes:

• There are more visitors than the previous quarter.
• There are more page accesses than the previous quarter.
• The accesses to the images, style sheets and PDF files have been removed from the statistics.
• The web statistics exclude those of the ASDD test gateway, the cgi-data and the cgi-bin scripts.
• The IP addresses of the ASDD gateway manager's computer have been removed from the statistics.
• The top 20 domains are not filtered. That is, the statistics include those of .com, .ip, .net, .edu, .mil, .gov, .org and .arpa which were filtered out in previous quarterly reports. The exclusion of these domains caused some confusion so they will be included in this and future quarterly reports.

Gateway Usage

The following statistics are a summary of the ASDD basic and ASDD power gateways:

ASDD Basic Gateway

• 5559 searches were made through the ASDD basic gateway.
• 4678 single search terms were used.
• 881 multiple search terms were used.

ASDD Power Gateway

• Approximately 851 searches were made through the ASDD power gateway.
• Approximately 499 single search terms were used.
• Approximately 352 multiple search terms were used.

Repository Records

The following table lists the repositories, the DTD used, the number of records per repository and the number of XML records that parsed and were accessible at the beginning of July 2003.

Note:

• These results take a long time to generate and may show different numbers to those of the monthly accesses. This could be due to nodes adding metadata to their repositories or some repositories not properly responding to the Z39.50 queries.
• "Not available" means that the server did not respond appropriately to the query at the time of investigation.
• "None" means that no DTD was provided in the XML records or no XML records were available. This is not a Z39.50 problem it is a processing problem.
• 95% of the those records tested, validate against a DTD which is the same as last quarter.
• Eleven repositories are using or partially using ANZMETA-1.3.DTD, which is the same as last quarter.
• Ten repositories have 100% valid records, which is the same as last quarter.

Repository managers are automatically notified by email if a server goes down for a period longer than four hours.
