January to March 2004

Introduction

At the end of March 2004, there were 25 repositories within the ASDD with a total of 33,750 dataset descriptions available for searching. Statistics are provided for the ASDD covering:

• web access statistics,
• gateway statistics,
• number of records at each repository,
• reliability of repository,

for the months of January, February and March 2004.

Repositories which have provided descriptions are also listed.

Achievements during past quarter

• A Z-Alarm report on all ASDD nodes was completed in February 2004. The individual node managers were made aware of these results. The reports should help node managers to configure their z-servers so that searches of their nodes will work properly.
• Development of the ASDD has been progressing well.
• The "Murray-Darling Basin Commission Documents" node is still off line while it is changing Internet service providers.
• The Tasmanian ASDD node is now more reliably accessible after having connection problems in the last quarter.
• Due to teething problems the repository reliability statistics for the "BRS and Australian Natural Resources Data Library (ANRDL)" node are not reliable. However, there appears to be no way of determining the true statistics for that node in the last quarter.
• There are less visitors and less accesses to the ASDD this quarter than last quarter probably due to some redirects being filtered out of the log files.

This quarter's statistics for the ASDD are available for the period 2004-01-01 to 2004-03-31.

• There are less page views this quarter probably because the redirects were filtered out of the log files.
• There are slightly less visitors than the previous quarter.
• There are slightly less page accesses than the previous quarter.

Gateway Usage

The following statistics are a summary of the ASDD basic and ASDD power gateways:

ASDD Basic Gateway

• 5188 searches were made through the ASDD basic gateway.
• 4326 single search terms were used.
• 862 multiple search terms were used.

ASDD Power Gateway

• Approximately 967 searches were made through the ASDD power gateway.
• Approximately 553 single search terms were used.
• Approximately 414 multiple search terms were used.

Repository Records

The following table lists the repositories, the DTD used, the number of records parsed per repository and the number of XML records that validated sometime during April 2004.

Note:

• These results take a long time to generate and may show different numbers to those of the monthly accesses. This could be due to nodes adding metadata to their repositories, some repositories not properly responding to the Z39.50 queries or not having records available in XML format.
• Only 85% of the ASDD records were available in XML format for validation.
• 99% of XML records that were parsed are valid.
• Ten repositories have 100% valid records, which is the same as last quarter.
• Fourteen repositories are using or partially using ANZMETA-1.3.DTD or it's extension, which is one more than last quarter.
• "Not available" means that the server did not respond appropriately to the query at the time of investigation.
• "None" means that no DTD was provided in the XML records or no XML records were available. This is not a Z39.50 problem it is a processing problem.

Repository managers are automatically notified by email if a server goes down for a period longer than four hours.
