Quarterly Technical Report

July to September 2004

Introduction

At the end of September 2004, there were 25 repositories within the ASDD with a total of 38,676 dataset descriptions available for searching. Statistics are provided for the ASDD covering:

  • web access statistics,
  • gateway statistics,
  • number of records at each repository,
  • reliability of repository,

for the months of July, August and September 2004.

Repositories which have provided descriptions are also listed.

Achievements during past quarter

  • Except for one node all of the ASDD nodes appear to be responding properly to the ASDD advanced search queries except in the case of badly formed metadata records.
  • The ACT Geographic Data Directory node replaced the "ACT Spatial Data Directory" node. This has fixed problems with the metadata content at the ACT node.
  • The RAN Directorate of Oceanography and Meteorology node replaced the "Australian Oceanographic Data Centre" node. This has fixed Z39.50 query problems with the replaced node.
  • The "BRS and Australian Natural Resources Data Library (ANRDL) - temporary" node has been completely replaced by the BRS and Australian Natural Resources Data Library (ANRDL) node.
  • The Qld Spatial Data (QSIIS) node was off line for a while as they were configuring their Isite2 software.
  • The ASDD basic metadata search interface was changed to *not* include the select list of ASDD nodes to make it more user friendly.
  • The "Murray-Darling Basin Commission Documents" node is still off line while it is changing Internet service providers.
  • The advanced search interface was used more often this quarter than the previous quarter.
  • There are more visitors and less accesses to the ASDD this quarter than last quarter. However, the new ZAP gateways produce less pages than the previously used Metastar gateway software which could account for the reduction in page views. (See comments below.)
  • The reliability of some of the ASDD nodes appears to have improved. This may be due to the new ZAP gateway software used to access the ASDD nodes.
  • Note:It was recently found that the node reliability was being accumulated over the last three months. This is why the nodes appear to be more reliable. This problem has been fixed and will be reflected in October's node status results.

Web Statistics for ASDD

This quarter's statistics for the ASDD are available for the period 2004-07-01 to 2004-09-30.

A summary of those statistics for this period follows:

This Quarter Last Quarter
Total page views (Access of a page as a whole e.g. html): 69,640 81,168
Total visitors: 4,466 4,346
Starting day: 1st July 2004 2004-04-01
Ending day: 30th September 2004 2004-06-30
Total days covered: 92 91
Average page views per day: 756 891
Average visitors per day: 96 89

Notes:

  • There are less page views this quarter.
  • There are more visitors than the previous quarter.
  • The less number of page views may be attributed to the new gateways. The Metastar gateways showed progress pages every 4 seconds during a search which, may last as long as 60 seconds whereas, the ZAP gateways show the results in one go. Hence, less pages are generated.

The following diagrams show the statistical trends for the last 11 quarters:
Total page views per quarter
Average page views per day per quarter
Total visitors per quarter
Average visitors per day per quarter

Gateway Usage

The following statistics are a summary of the ASDD basic and ASDD advanced gateways:

ASDD Basic Gateway

  • 3643 searches were made through the ASDD basic gateway.
  • 2273 single search terms were used.
  • 1370 multiple search terms were used.

The following links provide more details on the monthly basic gateway statistics:

ASDD Advanced Gateway

  • 1306 searches were made through the ASDD advanced gateway.
  • 838 single search terms were used.
  • 468 multiple search terms were used.

The following links provide more details on the monthly advanced gateway statistics:

Repository Records

The following table lists the repositories, the DTD used, the number of records parsed per repository and the number of XML records that validated sometime during October 2004.

Note:

  • These results take a long time to generate and may show different numbers to those of the monthly accesses. This could be due to nodes adding metadata to their repositories, some repositories not properly responding to the Z39.50 queries or not having records available in XML format.
  • 86% of the ASDD records were available in XML format for validation. This is less than last quarter.
  • 96% of XML records that were parsed are valid.
  • 12 repositories have 100% valid records, which is the same last quarter.
  • 15 repositories are using or partially using ANZMETA-1.3.DTD or it's extension, which is more than the last quarter.
  • One repository is referencing a local copy of their DTD in their XML records and hence they did not validate.
  • Some nodes just need to convert their & to the entity character reference equivalents.
  • "Not available" means that the server did not respond appropriately to the query at the time of investigation.
  • "None" means that no DTD was provided in the XML records or no XML records were available. This is not a Z39.50 problem it is a processing problem.
