Quarterly Technical Report

July to September 2009

Introduction

At the end of September 2009, there were 21 repositories within the ASDD with a total of 26,565 dataset descriptions available for searching. However, the Australian Antarctic Data Centre and WALIS ASDD nodes were down at that time. Statistics are provided for the ASDD covering:

  • web access statistics,
  • gateway statistics,
  • number of records at each repository,
  • reliability of repository,

for the months of July, August and September 2009.

Repositories which have provided descriptions are also listed.

The ASDD pilot GeoNetwork gateway has been set up for testing. The URL is: http://asdd.ga.gov.au/geonetwork/

The following GeoNetwork ASDD nodes have been added to this interface for testing purposes:

Note: that these nodes are not searchable by the current ASDD technology.

Achievements during past quarter

  • There are less basic but more advanced searches this quarter than last quarter.
  • Overall there are more searches than last quarter.
  • There are less visitors and less accesses to the ASDD this quarter than last quarter.
  • Some Z39.50 search errors in October be caused by poor metadata content. Some metadata discrepancies are highlighted in the advanced results report. Node managers are encouraged to review this report regularly.
  • Congratulations to: Australian Hydrographic Office - Product Metadata, Australian Hydrographic Office - Source Metadata, Bureau of Meteorology, Geoscience Australia, PSMA Australia Limited and Queensland Department of Natural Resources and Water Data for having valid ANZLIC Version 2 metadata.
  • Congratulations to: DEWHA Discover Information Geographically (DIG) and Geoscience Australia, for being available 100% of the time during this quarter.
  • The Australian Antarctic Data Centre ASDD node was unavailable for all of this quarter.
  • The WALIS nodes were not available for this quarter.
  • The ASDD gateways were unavailable for the following period of this quarter.
    • 2009-09-26T07:30+11,
    • 2009-09-26T08:30+11,
    • 2009-09-26T09:30+11 and
    • 2009-09-26T10:30+11.
This represents 4 hours of the whole quarter which is less that 0.2% of the total time.

Web Statistics for ASDD

This quarter's statistics for the ASDD are available for the period 2009-07-01 to 2009-09-30.

A summary of this quarter's statistics follows:

Gateway Usage

The following statistics are a summary of the ASDD basic and ASDD advanced gateways:

ASDD Basic Gateway

  • 31169 searches were made through the ASDD basic gateway.
  • 1281 single search terms were used.
  • 29888 multiple search terms were used.

The following links provide more details on the monthly basic gateway statistics:

ASDD Advanced Gateway

  • 2700 searches were made through the ASDD advanced gateway.
  • 857 single search terms were used.
  • 1843 multiple search terms were used.

The following links provide more details on the monthly advanced gateway statistics:

Repository Records

The following table lists the repositories, the DTD used, the number of records parsed per repository and the number of XML records that validated some time during July 2009.

Note:

  • The content of the ANZMETA-1.3 metadata records were validated using the RELAXNG schema.
  • These results take a long time to generate and August show different numbers to those of the monthly accesses. This could be due to nodes adding metadata to their repositories, some repositories not properly responding to the Z39.50 queries or not having records available in XML format.
  • 92% of the ASDD records were available in XML format for validation. This is less than last quarter.
  • 81% of XML records that were parsed are valid. This is more than the last quarter.
  • 6 repositories have 100% valid ANZLIC Version 2 metadata records, which is the same as the last quarter.
  • 16 repositories are using or partially using ANZMETA-1.3.DTD or its extension, which is the same as the last quarter.
  • Six ASDD nodes were not available for checking.
  • "Not available" means that the server did not respond appropriately to the query at the time of investigation.
