October to December 2003

Introduction

At the end of December 2003, there were 25 repositories within the ASDD with a total of 33,445 dataset descriptions available for searching. Statistics are provided for the ASDD covering:

• web access statistics,
• gateway statistics,
• number of records at each repository,
• reliability of repository,

for the months of October, November and December 2003.

Repositories which have provided descriptions are also listed.

Achievements during past quarter

• The ASDD gateway server hardware was upgraded and hence some interfaces will be quicker.
• A new BRS node "BRS and Australian Natural Resources Data Library (ANRDL)" was created and the old BRS node "BRS and Australian Natural Resources Data Library (ANRDL)" was renamed "BRS and Australian Natural Resources Data Library (ANRDL) - temporary".
• The "EA Environmental Data Directory (Green Pages)" was renamed "DEH Environmental Data Directory (Green Pages)".
• Note: The gateway logs from 20031130 to 20031202 were lost during the hardware upgrade process. Hence the gateway statistics do not include this period.
• The "Murray-Darling Basin Commission Documents" is still off line while it is changing Internet service providers.
• The Tasmanian ASDD node is having connection problems after system upgrades.
• There are more visitors but less accesses to the ASDD this quarter than last quarter.

Gateway Usage

Note that the ASDD gateways logs for the period 2003-11-30 to 2003-12-02 are unavailable and therefore these statistics do not reflect that period.

The following statistics are a summary of the ASDD basic and ASDD power gateways:

ASDD Basic Gateway

• 4062 searches were made through the ASDD basic gateway.
• 3508 single search terms were used.
• 554 multiple search terms were used.

ASDD Power Gateway

• Approximately 567 searches were made through the ASDD power gateway.
• Approximately 310 single search terms were used.
• Approximately 257 multiple search terms were used.

Repository Records

The following table lists the repositories, the DTD used, the number of records per repository and the number of XML records that parsed and were accessible sometime during January 2004.

Note:

• These results take a long time to generate and may show different numbers to those of the monthly accesses. This could be due to nodes adding metadata to their repositories or some repositories not properly responding to the Z39.50 queries.
• "Not available" means that the server did not respond appropriately to the query at the time of investigation.
• "None" means that no DTD was provided in the XML records or no XML records were available. This is not a Z39.50 problem it is a processing problem.
• 95% of the those records tested, validate against a DTD which is the same as last quarter.
• Twelve repositories are using or partially using ANZMETA-1.3.DTD, which is one more than last quarter.
• Ten repositories have 100% valid records, which is one more than last quarter.

Repository managers are automatically notified by email if a server goes down for a period longer than four hours.
