Quarterly Technical Report

October to December 2007

Introduction

At the end of December 2007, there were 24 repositories within the ASDD with a total of 39,909 dataset descriptions available for searching. Statistics are provided for the ASDD covering:

  • web access statistics,
  • gateway statistics,
  • number of records at each repository,
  • reliability of repository,

for the months of October, November and December 2007.

Repositories which have provided descriptions are also listed.

Achievements during past quarter

  • There are more basic and more advanced searches this quarter than last quarter.
  • Overall there are more searches than last quarter.
  • There are more visitors and less accesses to the ASDD this quarter than last quarter.
  • Some Z39.50 search errors may be caused by poor metadata content. Some metadata discrepancies are highlighted in the advanced results report. Node managers are encouraged to review this report regularly.
  • Due to circumstances beyond Geoscience Australia's control the ASDD gateways were unavailable at the most for an hour at about: 2007-10-19T19:30, 2007-10-28T02:30, 2007-12-16T16:30, 2007-12-16T19:30, 2007-12-16T20:30, 2007-12-16T21:30 for this quarter. This represents 6 hours or about 0.3% of this quarter.
  • Congratulations to: Australian Hydrographic Office - Product Metadata, Australian Hydrographic Office - Publication Metadata, Australian Hydrographic Office - Source Metadata, Bureau of Meteorology, Geoscience Australia and Queensland Department of Natural Resources and Mines Spatial Data for having 100% valid ANZLIC Version 2 metadata.
  • Congratulations to: Geoscience Australia, and Murray-Darling Basin Commission, Qld Spatial Data (QSIC) for being available 100% of the time during this quarter.
  • The Australian Antarctic Data Centre ASDD node was unavailable for most of this quarter.
  • Other Commonwealth Agencies (hosted by BRS) and BRS and Australian Natural Resources Data Library (ANRDL) were not available for most of this quarter.
  • The DEW Discover Information Geographically (DIG) was not available from 2007-12-11/2008-01-03.

  • 29590 searches were made through the ASDD basic gateway.
  • 1559 single search terms were used.
  • 28031 multiple search terms were used.

Repository Records

The following table lists the repositories, the DTD used, the number of records parsed per repository and the number of XML records that validated some time during January 2008.

Note:

  • The content of the ANZMETA-1.3 metadata records were validated using the RELAXNG schema.
  • These results take a long time to generate and November show different numbers to those of the monthly accesses. This could be due to nodes adding metadata to their repositories, some repositories not properly responding to the Z39.50 queries or not having records available in XML format.
  • 98% of the ASDD records were available in XML format for validation. This is the same as last quarter.
  • 66% of XML records that were parsed are valid. This is slightly more than the last quarter.
  • 6 repositories have 100% valid ANZLIC Version 2 metadata records, which is the same as last quarter.
  • 20 repositories are using or partially using ANZMETA-1.3.DTD or its extension, which is the same as last quarter.
  • Three ASDD nodes were not available for checking.
  • "Not available" means that the server did not respond appropriately to the query at the time of investigation.

The ASDD is an essential component of the Australian Spatial Data Infrastructure (ASDI). The gateway to the ASDD is maintained by Geoscience Australia on behalf of ANZLIC - the Spatial Information Council, as part of its broader Australian Government responsibility for the ASDI.
The individual ASDD nodes are implemented by State/Territory jurisdictions, Australian Government agencies, and commercial organisations (for details see all node descriptions). It is the responsibility of individual nodes to maintain their own metadata and nodes in accordance with the ANZLIC Metadata Guidelines and the ASDD Requirements and Standards.
